Duke earns memorable maiden win at Travelers

44-year-old makes Tour history

When Ken Duke won on Sunday, he made history on the PGA Tour by becoming the oldest maiden winner since 1995, when Ed Dougherty won his only title aged 47.

Duke won the Travelers Championship on the second play-off hole, where the 44-year-old American sank an easy birdie putt to beat Chris Stroud.

Stroud, a 31-year-old from Texas, forced the play-off by holing an impressive 48-foot chip on the final hole. Both then handled the the first play-off hole well with pars, before the second, where Duke landed his approach shot to within two feet of the cup. Stroud needed a 20-foot putt for birdie, but it wasn't to be and he finished with another par.

Speaking after the win, Duke told reporters: "I worked hard, I have knocked on the door a lot and here we are. That's what it's all about.

“You gotta believe in yourself in everything you do. It's kind of one of those things once you finally do it, it might come easier the next time. That's kind of the way I feel. You have to be patient. You can't make things happen out here. You can't win by pushing everything.”

Pádraig Harrington started the weekend well, when a brace of 66s left the 41-year old just two strokes behind former Masters champion Bubba Watson – who finished fourth – entering the third round. Putting problems scuppered any hopes of ending his five-year PGA Tour drought.
